Apple has acquired the Canadian artificial intelligence (AI) startup company DarwinAI as it prepares its own AI products. DarwinAI's employees have joined Apple's team.
One of DarwinAI's specialties is the creation of smaller, faster AI systems. This is useful to Apple, which has been transitioning their software products and services to work offline on users mobile devices, which have limited processing power and storage.
Small, fast, on-device AI would be helpful during Internet outages or when people only have access to mobile data, which is expensive. It is also a good stepping stone for privacy, as it doesn't have to upload everything you ask it to a remote server.
